Progressive Discipline


Far too many supervisors do not handle discipline issues that come up because they don’t want to deal with confrontation or because they feel sorry for the employee involved. Nothing could be worse than ignoring the problem and hoping it will go away. I guarantee you, it seldom does.

In this article, the final section in our three-part series, “Progressive Discipline", we continue our discussion of effective ways to discipline employees. The first article dealt with the establishment of a written policy and explored the various means of communicating the policy. In the second part, we looked at the common progression of a disciplinary process and this month, we will conclude the series with a discussion of successful ways to deviate from policy, the importance of documentation and the impact of employment-at-will factors on progressive discipline.
